His parents were Erminia Rudersdorff (1822–1882), the Russian-born operatic soprano, and her husband Maurice Mansfield (died 1861), a British London-based wine merchant. His grandfather was the violinist Joseph Rudersdorff.〔Turney, Wayne S.
